A Potts Point strip club could face closure if it does not comply with a fire safety order.

City of Sydney Council have approved a recommendation that a fire safety order be issued to the Dollhouse Gentleman’s Club on Kellett St after it was found to have inadequate fire detection and alarm systems, suitable fire-resisting construction to prevent the spread of fire and a safe emergency exit for occupants to safely evacuate.

The nightclub boasts itself as the premier gentleman’s club in Sydney. It is located on the ground floor of a three-storey building with residential units above.

A City of Sydney Council spokesman said staff were working with the venue owners to ensure the building was compliant as soon as possible.

“The order will contain a number of actions to be taken, each with varying time frames for completion,” the spokesman said.

“If the building does not become compliant before deadline, the City’s legal team may prosecute the building owners.

“Penalties may include fines, court action or venue closure.”

Dollhouse Gentleman’s Club has been contacted for comment.

The council found there was inadequate fire detection and alarm systems, a zone block plan was not installed and there was a lack of suitable fire-resistant construction and a safe emergency exit for occupants to safely evacuate. It also found a cleaners storage cupboard had been formed around the recess of the fire hose reel.

The rear exits of the premises were also identified as a safety concern.

“The rear exit to Mansions Lne is through a roller shutter,” the report said.

“The roller shutter was locked in the closed position while the building was occupied, and does not open automatically on activation of a fire or smoke alarm.

“To open the roller shutter, occupants are required to disconnect the roller shutter motor, then pull the shutter door open manually.

“The instructions on how to open the roller shutter are unclear and are not displayed in a prominent location.”

The report also found some walls were constructed of non-fire resisting timber “and require the installation of additional fire-resisting elements to restrict the spread of fire.”

“As a result of a site inspection undertaken by Council investigation officers it is recommended that Council exercise its powers to give a notice of intention for a fire safety order to be issued,” the report said.

“The issue of a fire safety order will ensure that suitable fire safety systems are in position throughout the building to provide improved and adequate provisions for fire safety
