Burwood’s own Gee Ozgen, the man behind the widely successful Mister Gee Burger Truck, has been voted the inner west’s best burger slinger.

There was some stiff competition, with cult burger bar Mary’s Newtown making a late run for the inner west’s best burger crown, but mobile burger fans turned up the heat to get Mister Gee across the line in an online poll run on the Inner West Courier Facebook page.

The accolade brought an enormous smile to the face of Ozgen who has struggled through a tough eight months since his burger on wheels business exploded on the way to its home of four years on Parramatta Rd at Haberfield last July.

“It happened while we were in transit, it was a gas leak we weren’t aware of, it just exploded. This was our baby, our first business, but the most important thing is that everyone was safe.”

Ozgen has kept the Mister Gee name relevant through a series of pop-ups across Sydney, including Rhodes and Surry Hills. The next pop-up at North Strathfield’s Conservation Cafe will be running on Friday, Saturday and Sunday nights from March 29.

So how far is Ozgen from getting his wheels back? The new food truck and location will be revealed in June.

Ozgen’s burger journey started with a pretty simple premise.

”In late 2014, after travelling to the States, I had an idea to come back and do burgers,” he said. “People responded to the quality of our burgers, with big lines every night, and the concept was simple; one burger per week, so on rotation we had about six burgers.”

Ozgen also owns Happy Ending in Concord which made the top five in the poll.

“It is a little burger joint in the suburbs that we have been running for over 14 months now,” he said.
