A police dog caught a young Balmain man outside an Australian DJ’s concert with drugs in his back pocket.
Julian Wynne faced Downing Centre Local Court, which is currently sitting at the JMT building, for sentence on Monday. He pleaded guilty to two counts of possessing a prohibited drug.
Magistrate Megan Greenwood convicted Wynne and fined him $330.
Court documents state the 21-year-old was at the concert entry gates to see well-known Australian DJ and producer Mall Grab, at Carriageworks, Eveleigh.
Grab, who is not accused of any wrongdoing, is known for producing house and techno music and has a large social media following with 214K followers on Instagram and 85K followers on Facebook.
Police state the over-18s electronic dance music event drew in a crowd of around 5000. Officers set up a dog operation at the entry gates where one of the trained dogs sat next to Wynne.
Wynne told police he had drugs in his back pocket and he was taken to the custody area set up nearby to be searched. Officers found 0.9g of ketamine and 1.0g of MDMA. He was very apologetic and remorseful for his actions, police facts state.
At his court appearance, Wynne represented himself and told the court his behaviour was out of character.
“I’m embarrassed about what I have done,” he said. “It was bad judgment, I won’t do it again.”
Ms Greenwood said Wynne had two different drugs on him and there was no way for him to tell what was in the drugs he would have been consuming.
“Drugs cause terrible harm to the community,” she said. “He may have learnt his lesson but I must record a conviction.”
“Things will get worse if you show up here again.”
