Six candidates will be vying for the seat of Sydney on Saturday March 23.
Holding the seat of Sydney since 2012 is independent MP, Alex Greenwich. The 38-year-old won a by-election for the seat when his mentor, former MP Clover Moore became Lord Mayor of City of Sydney Council.
He holds the seat by a margin of about 8 per cent and polling suggests he is likely to increase his lead by approximately d 2 per cent.
Going up against him is the Liberals’ Lyndon Gannon, Jo Holder of the ALP, Fiona Douskou of The Small Business Party, Christopher Thomas of Sustainable Australia and Jonathan Harms, representing the Greens.
Mr Gannon, who resides in Darlinghurst, said it would be tough going up against Mr Greenwich. He previously ran for Balmain Council in 2015.
He said his unique ideas would resonate with the community. He would like to see better engagement with public spaces and Sydney Harbour and his ideas included transforming Darlinghurst Courthouse into an arts and culture precinct, building three harbour baths at Elizabeth Bay, Barangaroo and Pyrmont, and advocating for the proposed skate park at Rushcutters Bay.
Mr Greenwich is campaigning to end homelessness and build more affordable housing, as well as focusing on climate change and social justice reform. He also sits with Labor and the Greens in fighting the redevelopment of Allianz Stadium. “Building more supported social housing — not building stadiums … and setting strong affordable housing targets in redevelopments,” he said.
Jo Holder (Labor) said the city had overcrowded hospitals, a lack of schools, and unaffordable housing.
Greens candidate Jonathan Harms is campaigning on climate change, pill testing, renters rights.
