Ourimbah: Krystal Begg’s chilling confession to attacking Sara-Jane Christensen with a hammer

A junkie told police she was “devo’d” and “spewin” that a woman she had bludgeoned with a claw hammer had survived the horrific attack, which left her victim with permanent brain damage, a court has heard.

The first time police interviewed Krystal Lee Begg over the shocking, senseless attack of a young mum on the Central Coast she told officers she had nothing to do with it.

But after a month in custody — having been charged with a separate home invasion — the now 30-year-old told police during her second interview that the victim had slept with her boyfriend a year before and she “got to have a bit of fun”, but she was disappointed the victim survived.

Begg appeared via video link at Wyong Local Court on Tuesday where she pleaded guilty to causing grievous bodily harm by wounding with intent to murder Sara-Jane Christensen.

Emergency services were called to a public housing complex on Walmsley Ave, Ourimbah, shortly after 10am on July 3 last year after Ms Christensen’s flatmate found her badly beaten in their living room.

“Her head had an open wound, and her brain was on show,” an agreed set of facts states.

Ms Christensen was flown to John Hunter Hospital in a critical condition with multiple skull fractures.

She had a titanium plate inserted where her shattered skull had been and spent the next three months in hospital.

The now 35-year-old mum of two boys still requires 24-hour daily care and assistance, including a hoist to lift her in and out of bed.

An agreed set of facts states Begg had been living in another apartment at the Ourimbah public housing complex with her then boyfriend and got to know Ms Christensen through him.

She told police on the morning Ms Christensen was attacked she had gone to Westfield Tuggerah before returning home through the back door because “there were police everywhere”.

Begg, who according to the facts smoked ice every few days, was interviewed by police but released without charge.

Two weeks later she was arrested and charged with breaking into another unit at Wyong on July 19 and assaulting the occupant.

Begg had been in custody for just over a month on those charges when detectives interviewed her a second time over Mr Christensen’s injuries.

She told them Ms Christensen had slept with her boyfriend a year earlier and she had broken up with him over it.

Begg told officers there was some “jealousy shit” between them but otherwise she and Ms Christensen had remained friends.

It was at this point in the interview, the facts state, that Begg became cryptic about her true motives which she described only as “my business”.

“I got to have a bit of fun and I’m spewin the bitch isn’t f--ken dead,” she told police.

“And trust me if I get out she’s going to be dead and so is [Begg’s ex]. I plan on having a hell of a lot of more f--ken fun and that’s that.”

Begg reiterated twice more that she was disappointed the victim wasn’t dead.

“Well I got to have a bit of fun, I got to cave her skull in didn’t I, spewing it didn’t happen properly, devo’d, considering what I did it for but anyway which has got nothing to do with being a pathetic worthless little thing over jealousy ‘cause that’s pathetic,” she told officers.

Begg has previously pleaded guilty to destroying property, intimidation and assault occasioning actual bodily harm over the Wyong home invasion.

She will face Gosford District Court on September 26 to fix a sentence for both matters.
