A serial offender crossed onto the wrong side of the road and forced oncoming motorists to swerve for their lives during a cat-and-mouse chase with police in a stolen car, a court has heard.
Cherine Maree Wilson, 32, of Point Clare, was not long out of jail having served 10 months for a string of shoplifting, assault and driving offences — including failing to stop during pursuits — when a police officer noticed her behind the wheel of a red MG sedan on the morning of October 17 at Umina Beach.
Checks revealed the number plates did not match the 2021-model car.
Wilson faced Wyong Local Court on Tuesday where she pleaded guilty to not stopping during a police pursuit, knowingly drive a stolen car, driving while disqualified and unlawfully possessing a fake number plate.
An agreed set of facts states the officer gave chase but the pursuit was terminated a short time later because of safety concerns when Wilson was clocked travelling 80km/h in a 50km/h zone.
“The vehicle overtook other motor vehicles which caused oncoming vehicles to swerve to avoid a collision,” the facts state.
Later that afternoon - about 2.30pm - another officer spotted the red MG and initiated a pursuit along Brisbane Water Drive before it too, was abandoned because of safety reasons.
About five minutes later a female officer on Woy Woy Rd saw the same red MG sedan pass her travelling in the opposite direction so the officer did a U-turn and activated her lights and sirens.
“The offender crossed onto the incorrect side of the road to overtake vehicles at an estimated speed of 100km/h in a signposted speed limit of 80km/h,” the facts read.
“The offender overtook two vehicles on a bend that is without view of oncoming vehicles in the oncoming lane.”
Wilson narrowly avoided hitting another car before overtaking a truck across double lines and nearly collided head on with another car coming the other way.
Police deployed road spikes at Kariong that punctured one of the car’s front tyres but Wilson kept going and turned right against a red light onto the Central Coast Highway.
She got as far as the Brisbane Water Drive intersection at West Gosford where she turned right again through a red light before abandoning the car at Point Clare.
Wilson and her two passengers fled on foot into a nearby residential area.
Police seized the car and discovered the number plate was made of “paper”.
Wilson was disqualified from driving at the time until June 2028.
“The red MG vehicle was searched by police and identification documents were located belonging to the offender,” the facts state.
Wilson was later arrested at Tuggerah but didn’t participate in an interview.
Her fingerprints were found on the inside and outside of the red MG, which had been stolen from the garage of an over-55s unit complex at Berkeley Vale a week earlier.
Wilson was adjourned to Gosford District Court on September 12 to fix a sentencing date.
