A young woman charged with the dangerous driving death of her brother in the early hours of the morning on the Central Coast was excused from attending court for the first time because she herself suffered a “medical episode”.
The woman, 20, was supposed to face Wyong Local Court for the first time on Monday, August 26, but her solicitor Drew Hamilton told the court she had “sustained a medical episode this morning” and could not attend.
The woman, who cannot be named for legal reasons, was granted bail after being charged at special bedside hearing at Gosford Hospital with dangerous driving occasioning death, negligent driving occasioning death, driving while suspended and failing to stop and assist after a crash.
Charge sheets allege the woman, who was 19 at the time, was behind the wheel of a 2014 black Holden Commodore station wagon when she allegedly left the Pacific Highway at Charmhaven at 1.35am on July 31 and hit a tree.
The charge sheets state the woman’s brother, 17, died in the collision and she allegedly fled the scene.
She was located a short time later and taken to hospital for injuries allegedly sustained in the crash.
The court heard the matter was likely to be quite involved with several “brief orders” expected to be made, meaning the police are likely to file its full brief of evidence in stages.
The matter was adjourned to October 22 and the woman is excused from attending court if legally represented.
