A marine mechanic told police he had no memory of getting kicked out of a pub before smashing the glass doors of eight shop fronts as he walked home, a court has heard.
Darren Stephen Daniel Kennedy, 32, of Long Jetty, faced Wyong Local Court on Wednesday where he pleaded guilty to eight counts of intentionally destroying property.
Representing himself, Kennedy told the court he was sorry.
“I just got way too drunk,” he said.
Magistrate Trevor Khan said he needed to see what options were available and adjourned Kennedy’s sentence to September 10 to undergo a full sentence assessment report.
“It’s pretty serious going on a crime spree at night kicking everyone’s doors in down the street,” Mr Khan said.
An agreed set of facts states Kennedy was drinking at the Long Jetty Hotel on Saturday, June 21, when he was kicked out by two security guards at 2.38am for being too drunk.
He was then captured on CCTV from various businesses walking down The Entrance Rd repeatedly kicking the glass doors to eight shops until they shattered.
“The accused is captured on great quality CCTV by most of the businesses kicking the glass door in a donkey kick motion, kicking each glass panel multiple times,” the facts state.
Some of the business owners were alerted by security systems to their mobile phones and contacted police.
“A forensic analysis was completed for fingerprints and DNA,” the facts state.
“During the analysis a blood stain was located on the door of Express Timber Solutions. CCTV provided by Express Timber Solutions shows the accused looking down at his right hand after shattering the glass.”
The following Monday Kennedy handed himself in to police shortly after 5pm after a friend sent him a video on Facebook “doing the damage”.
“The last thing I remember was playing pool at the pub,” he told police.
Kennedy was wearing the same shoes from the footage and had a small laceration on the palm of his right hand.
The total damage bill was estimated at $4600 and included shop windows and doors at Pizza Inn, Killa Beauty, Running Repairs, Charcoal Chicken, Three Donkeys, Long Jetty Launderette, Swirls and Things and Express Timber Solutions.
The police facts state Kennedy willingly handed himself in when he was told what he had done and officers “did not have the accused as a suspect for the matter” and were still making inquiries at the time.
