LOCAL pizza joints are vital members of any community, and Woy Woy has one of a kind.

Tropicana Pizza Pizza not only operates as a pizza shop and bar, but is also entwined in the community and has hosted a range of festivals featuring local honey, reggae and the upcoming annual Hot Sauce Fiesta on June 8.

Owners Tim and Cate Stewart moved to the peninsula five years ago, taking over the premises where Woy Woy Gourmet used to run on Blackwall Rd.

“We thought this would be a great place to do a bar and pizza shop,” Mr Stewart said.

“For us it’s more than just pizzas, we like to be involved with the community. Woy Woy is changing, it has a good vibe with young families moving up from Sydney.”

Mrs Stewart is the resident interior designer and has created a very funky 70s tropical theme, while Mr Stewart, who has a media background, has mastered sensational pizza.

He said a point of difference at Tropicana Pizza Pizza was the 30 hour cold fermented dough.

“The yeast breaks the gluten down so it’s much better for your stomach,” he said.

The dough is not only light and holds it’s form, but is full of flavour. The menu is small, yet packs a punch with choices such as Big Hungry, Triple Cheese and Fisherman’s Wharf with locally sourced seafood.

We tried the signature pizza Tropicana with double smoked ham, shaved pineapple and jalapeños. This is definitely not your average ham and pineapple, but I wouldn’t have it any other way, the jalapeños worked perfectly with the fresh ham and sweet pineapple.

My personal favourite was the Tony Pepperoni, which was finished with chilli infused honey. The combination of the chilli honey and pepperoni was a match made in heaven.

Tropicana Pizza Pizza is a great option for kids, with seven inch pizzas to suit all tastes, along with finger licking snacks. It is located inside a courtyard so adults can happily relax with a glass of wine of craft beer while the kids explore.

Hot Sauce Fiesta will include both hot sauce and food vendors, with Crowleys Sauces travelling from Wagga Wagga, along with free entertainment. It will run from 1pm-5pm.
