A good burger can come in many forms … from those who like crispy chicken to a juicy meat or vego patty.

And then there’s the question of how much salad belongs and does have pineapple have a place on a burger?

When Matt Preston put out a call for the Central Coast’s best burger, we were swarmed with nominations from specialised burger restaurants, along with pubs, restaurants, cafes and takeaway stores.

The 2021 winner is Bateau Bay Fish Shop – a takeaway that has been doing it their way for the past 30 years, serving what they describe as “real” burgers.

Owners Colin and Denise Byth were surprised with the news and humbled to be recognised for their burgers.

Mr Byth told the Express they go through 25kg of mince and make 300-400 burgers each week – that equates to around 600,000 burgers over the past 30 years.

He said while there was no special secret, “everything is fresh” and they have an extensive burger menu with everything from the barra burger to lentil burger and the popular chicken schnitzel burger.

“All the mince is fresh to order and we have fresh fish and chips,” he said.

“We find that people mainly want an original style burger, with no fancy salads. They like the traditional lettuce, tomato and beetroot. So that’s what we do.”

During my visit to Bateau Bay Fish Shop, I was treated to a hamburger with the works.

When they say fresh they mean it – you can taste it in every mouth-watering bite.

It was without doubt a “bloody good burger”.

Hot on the heels of Byth’s Fish and Chip Shop was Fred and Mag Takeaway in Davistown along with the soon to reopen Chop N Grind in Terrigal, BMX Burgers in Umina Beach, Sal and Co in Wamberal, Moobi Valley Meat in Berkeley Vale and Budgewoi Corner Store.

No matter what your tastebuds prefer, there’s definitely no shortage of great burgers across our region.

Bateau Bay Fish Shop and Takeaway is at 2/103 Bateau Bay Rd.
