The two female students stabbed at the Australian National University in Canberra have been identified.

Ilysha Perry and Isabelle Vasudeva, both 20, were allegedly attacked by former undergraduate Alex Leonard Ophel, 24, at the prestigious campus in Acton on Monday.

Police allege about 2.40pm Ophel initially engaged a male student by hitting him on the head with a frying pan with the student running away from the scene.

The 24-year-old then allegedly stabbed Ms Perry and Ms Vasudeva before he approached a second male student and punched him in the face.

Emergency services rushed to the scene and took both women to hospital, where it’s understood Ms Perry is in a serious but stable condition while Ms Vasudeva is in a stable condition.

The two male victims did not require hospitalisation. This publication understands Ms Perry is an ANU student from Batemans Bay on the south coast.

Both women were near the Chifley Library adjacent to Fellows Oval when police allege Ophel attacked.

The 24-year-old was taken into custody and charged with two counts of attempted murder, two counts of common assault and one count of possessing an object to be used to kill.

No motive for the incident has been identified and police do not believe the victims knew the accused.

The 24-year-old appeared briefly in the ACT Magistrates Court on Tuesday and did not apply for bail. He was remanded into custody to appear in court in October.

Australian National University deputy vice-chancellor Sally Wheeler on Tuesday thanked the brave students and staff who put themselves into danger to help the women and shepherd others from danger.

Professor Wheeler said security would be ramped up at the university in light of Monday’s events, which included more security patrols.
