A popular fast food restaurant could soon be serving up crispy and zesty chicken for an up-and-coming southern Canberra suburb.

Chisholm Village submitted the development application to the ACT Government in late 2022 to construct a KFC takeaway and drive-through restaurant along Benham St, between Mead and Halley St.

The application, which has had notifications open since January 10, also included the construction of a new click and collect addition to Coles, relocation of a car wash and other works after the demolition of the car park.

Development documents say this new single-storey venture would help “activate the Chisholm Group Centre beyond the existing shopping centre building”.

Its design would follow traditional layouts of other KFCs around Australia with documents saying it used simple “geometry with bright colouring and distinctive, varied materiality”.

“Extensive lighting and design elements such as the wall-height mural, combined with considered landscaping, enhances the public realm,” the document said.

“Design of the structures for the supermarket and car wash are simple in design and modernise the Benham Street public realm to transform the rear of buildings into an active block frontage.”

The development application for the KFC Chisholm development was submitted in September 2022.

In documents seen by the Canberra Star, the development received up to 47 public representation comments on October 17, 2022.

Some submissions touched on the concern for the centre being a suitable site for a KFC, the impact the fast food giant would have on other businesses, its proximity to the Tuggeranong KFC and the failure of a previous McDonald’s application in recent years.

In their responses, Purdon Planning, on behalf of the developer, said the site of a KFC in the centre was not a planning matter and all businesses were subject to market forces “out of their control”.

The company said in development documents the new KFC’s proximity to another chain in Tuggeranong was up to the chain owner and the McDonald’s development was a separate proposal under different planning conditions.

The application is up for notification until February 10.
