A man who smashed his fiance’s engagement ring with a hammer after being brushed from her brunch catch-up with a friend has appeared in court.

Raymond Green 46, of Hebersham, appeared in Mt Druitt Local Court on four charges of destroy/ damage property and stalk/intimidate.

Agreed facts tendered to the court reveal Green’s year-long relationship with the woman had become increasingly toxic due to his jealous and controlling behaviour.

On the morning of February 4, the woman told Green she was taking their youngest child to brunch with a friend at Parramatta. Green protested, and asked if he could join.

Later, he arrived at the cafe unannounced which sparked an argument between the couple.

The bickering continued into the night with Green asked to move out due to his erratic behaviour.

In response, according to court documents, he flew into a rage and threatened to smash his fiance’s sister‘s iPhone before picking up a hammer.

With the hammer, he smashed his fiance’s engagement ring and damaged the floor in the process.

Green’s fiance’s mother, holding a puppy to stop it from running away, ordered him to leave.

According to court documents Green then threatened to flick a cigarette in her face and then snatched the dog and ran onto the street, attempting to take the pet with him.

The 46-year-old’s father gave evidence at court that his son was “no angel” but had made consistent efforts to improve his behaviour, including seeing a medical professional.

Green’s lawyer made a bid to have the charges dealt with on mental health grounds, telling the court the Hebersham man had ADHD and had seizures since the age of five which caused a cognitive impairment, which was linked to the explosive incident.

The police prosecutor told the court due to the level of anger displayed, it was in the community interest for it to be dealt with under law.

Magistrate George Breton described the incident as a “disgraceful” example of coercive control.

“There was clearly some jealousy over attending the brunch, but you have no right to choose everything about her life and to interfere with her life,” he said.

“Then you had the audacity to follow her home, smash her engagement ring and floor with a hammer, out of spite. It’s disgraceful behaviour really.”

Despite his stern dressing down Mr Breton opted not to record an conviction, accepting Green’s application for the matters to dealt with on the grounds of mental health.

Raymond Green’s charges were dismissed on the grounds he attend regular appointments with his psychologist and take his prescribed medication as directed.
