Scott Morrison comes with a broken party hellbent on destroying itself but he can’t be underestimated, says Sam Dastyari

THE Labor Party were initially elated by the Liberal leadership spill but Bill Shorten is by no means guaranteed to win the next election, warns former Labor senator Sam Dastyari.

FORMER Labor senator Sam Dastyari has issued a warning to his party not to become complacent despite the chaos rocking the Liberals.

Mr Dastyari watched last week’s leadership crisis on the sidelines after bowing out of parliament in a donations scandal earlier this year and resigning from the Senate.

SAM DASTYARI ON MIRANDA LIVE:

But he told Miranda Live yesterday his contacts in the Labor Party were initially elated by the Liberal leadership spill.

“While this was all going down, there was a view within the Labor Party that we’ve been hit on the a … with a rainbow,” Mr Dastyari said.

DASTYARI: Labor’s elation over Turnbull’s demise and Scott Morrison’s rise ‘shortsighted’

“I had one of Bill’s (Labor leader Mr Shorten) biggest rivals text me and say: ‘Not even Bill can stuff it up from here’.”

However, Mr Dastyari — who recently hosted the Channel 10 pilot TV show Disgrace — said he does not share the view that Bill Shorten is guaranteed to win the next election.

“Bill Shorten and Scott Morrison are actually very, very similar people,” he said.

“They’re both likeable, a bit daggy, dads with kids who are fairly suburban … very different to Malcolm … ScoMo is a huge electoral problem for the Labor Party.”
