HE MAY be ScoMo the footy-loving former treasurer to the public, but Labor strategists are rebranding newly minted prime minister Scott Morrison as “Turnbull without the top hat”.

Morrison vows to make the drought his priority

HE may be footy-loving ScoMo to the public, but Labor strategists are rebranding newly minted Prime Minister Scott Morrison as “Turnbull without the top hat”.

Third party research this week shows Mr Morrison is not as popular with women as his predecessor Malcolm Turnbull, nor does he have the same grip on metropolitan seats.

While Mr Morrison hails from Sydney’s aspirational south, a Labor Party source said he had “less appeal” in the western Sydney electorates.

Within hours of victory, the NSW ALP was taking calls from potential candidates wanting to run in the marginal western Sydney seat of Lindsay.

Labor frontbencher Anthony Albanese said the party’s attack strategy was unlikely to change significantly, given the policies were expected to remain the same.

“Morrison has been the Treasurer who presided over disastrous policies. And it is the policies that are the problem, the policy direction that is the problem, not the personality,” he said.

One Labor strategist said the former immigration minister will try to soften his “stop the boats” image in a bid to broaden his public appeal.

He said: “Scomo will try to be all things to all people, like positioning himself as the rugby league guy.

“But he is Turnbull without the top hat.

“He spent two years defending the banks from the royal commission and campaigned for the banks to receive $17 billion in tax cuts.

“As Treasurer he presided over cuts to schools and hospitals and this is what he will not be able to run from.”

Research has also shown Morrison had not posed as big a threat as Foreign Affairs Minister Julie Bishop.

“He wasn’t as big a threat as Bishop,” the source said.
