Police charge 22-year-old man, 16-year-old boy after alleged 100km chase between Ballina and Illuka in northern NSW

Police allege a 16-year-old boy and a young man led officers on an M1 chase stretching about 100km in a stolen Ford Focus before a police vehicle was rammed in northern NSW.

Police allege a teenage boy and a young man led officers on an M1 chase stretching about 100 kilometres in a stolen Ford Focus before a police vehicle was rammed in northern NSW.

The man was bitten by a police dog during the arrest and had to be treated by paramedics.

Richmond Police District Highway Patrol officers tried to stop the Ford on the Pacific Motorway at West Ballina about 12.20am on Thursday, according to NSW Police.

“When the vehicle allegedly failed to stop as directed, a pursuit was initiated, continuing south to Iluka where the vehicle allegedly rammed two police vehicles before coming to a stop,” a statement read.

Police said the 22-year-old driver and a 16-year-old passenger were arrested “with the assistance” of a police dog and taken to Grafton Police Station.

“There the driver was treated by NSW Ambulance paramedics for a dog-bite injury sustained during the arrest,” the statement read.

The 22-year-old man has been charged with engaging in a police pursuit, driving unlicensed without ever being licensed, driving a vehicle taken without consent, use of an offensive weapon to prevent lawful detention and hindering or resisting police.

He faced Grafton Local Court on Thursday and was refused bail to appear before the same court on Monday.

The 16-year-old boy has been charged with being carried in a vehicle taken without consent and intentionally throwing an object at a vehicle, risking safety.

He was refused bail to face the Children’s Court of NSW on Thursday and was granted conditional bail.

The boy was ordered to face the same court on April 12.
