A North Coast man with the nickname “monster” has been jailed for at least 18 years after committing sadistic sex attacks on four people – including some with cognitive impairments.
Clarence Valley man Frank Parese, 45, has been sentenced to a total of 28 years in prison, with a non-parole period of 18-and-a-half years.
The earliest the violent rapist – who threatened some victims with knives – could be released from jail following 34 separate offences is November 4, 2038.
“Monster”, 45, was found guilty of multiple counts of aggravated sexual assault against someone who has a cognitive impairment and having sexual intercourse with a person who is cognitively impaired, as well as assault occasioning actual bodily harm, choking, aggravated robbery and being armed with intent.
The sex attacks involved occurred over three separate time periods in 2017, 2018 and 2020.
Parese was on parole for unrelated offences at the time of some attacks.
In Downing Centre District Court on Thursday, Judge Nicole Norman detailed the violent and degrading nature of Parese’s crimes.
Parese met his first victim on social media and travelled to Ballina to stay with her, attacking her in 2017.
They used methamphetamines together and Parese “controlled her”, knowing she did not have strong connections in the area.
Parese sexually assaulted her multiple times. In once instance, he forced her to perform oral sex – after she objected because she had suffered sexual abuse as a child.
On other occasions, the victim passed out during oral sex and Parese sexually assaulted her after she had self harmed, the court was told.
Parese also held a knife to the victim’s throat and forced her to delete everything on her phone when he became jealous.
He was similarly violent when he preyed on three more victims with cognitive impairments.
He met one victim outside Grafton Shopping World and forced her to have sex with him after hearing she had a brain injury, the court heard.
While at a motel in Lismore, he tied the victim up, put a sock in her mouth and injected her with the drug ice while telling her to “get on her knees and do her job”.
He threatened another victim with a knife after sending her photos of himself including the word “Monster” – which the court heard was his moniker.
Parese made a male victim drive to Casino, near Lismore, where he purchased meth and tied the man up to sexually assault him.
The rapist repeatedly said: “If you’re so smart, get yourself out of it.”
Judge Norman told the court all of Parese’s offending was serious and said he knew three of the victims had the cognitive disabilities.
“The acts were brutal and forceful – he was exploitative in taking what he wanted,” he said.
“Each victim was treated with disdain and as a sexual commodity.
“He persisted over objection and he persisted even when his victims vomited or gagged.”
At a previous hearing, the prosecutor labelled Parese offending “sadistic sexual violence”.
Defence barrister Anthony Parsons told the court Parese, a father, lived with complex post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and trauma after an abusive childhood.
He also has mobility issues and required a back operation last year.
Previously, the court was told Parese watched a large amount of violent and degrading online pornography and had been addicted to ice.
The sentence was backdated to when Parese first entered custody on May 5, 2020.
