'I'm in love with someone nearly triple my age'

A Mid-North Coast woman who made international headlines while defending her relationship with a man three decades her senior has now faced court for violence against him.

In September last year, 19-year-old Jorja McMahon spoke out about the “cruel comments” she copped about her relationship and the 30-year age gap.

“They’ve told me ... I’m only with him for money,” McMahon said after she had been living with her partner, named as Graham Sly, for three months.

“We do get dirty looks when out in public, and people tell me my partner is old enough to be my dad.

“But then I politely explain that my dad is deceased, and they feel guilty.”

McMahon said Graham Sly, who was 48 at the time, helped pull her out of a dark period in her life and get her back on track.

On Monday, McMahon from Taree, now 20-years-old, faced Taree Local Court.

She was sentenced for domestic violence charges, including destroying property and assault.

Court documents state the couple’s relationship ended after 11 months, but McMahon still visited Mr Sly’s Taree home, where the offending took place.

Mr Sly was in court to support McMahon, despite the relationship breakdown outlined by police in the documents.

On July 13, an argument broke out over a bottle of wine. McMahon reached over his shoulder to grab the bottle and it hit the victim in the face, police state.

Five days later, McMahon returned to Mr Sly’s house.

He overheard a conversation about “flogging” him, the documents state.

“I don’t care what youse (sic) talk about but don’t come here to my house threatening me. I’m not putting up with it,” he said.

Mr Sly was drinking a cup of tea when McMahon grabbed at it, spilling the hot liquid and burning his lap.

Police state she called Mr Sly a “gronk” and threw a plastic jar at his face.

McMahon also grabbed Mr Sly’s phone and caused it to drop to the floor.

She pleaded guilty to two counts of assault and one count each of intentionally or recklessly destroying property and contravening a prohibition in a court order.

Without proceeding to a conviction on any of the charges, Magistrate Allison Hawkins sentenced McMahon to a 15-month conditional release order.

An apprehended violence order protecting Mr Sly was continued, but altered so McMahon could continue to keep her cat at his property.
