Southern Queensland has endured its coldest morning of the year so far, the Bureau of Meteorology says, with temperatures plummeting below zero as a major cold snap begins to take effect.

The mercury dipped to as low as -0.1C in Kingaroy, more than 5C below the June average, as a high centred near Victoria extends a ridge of high pressure and cool, dry conditions over most of Queensland.

Overnight minimums reached 0.5C in Oakey, 0.3C at Wellcamp and 1.1C at Warwick and Dalby, but it felt a lot colder, with the apparent temperature falling to -1.5C, -3C and -1.4C respectively.

Further west, Roma residents suffered through temperatures of 0.3C, with an apparent temperature of -2.2C.

Closer to the coast, things were only a little warmer, with Brisbane dipping to 8.2C, more than three decrees colder than the June average, while the Sunshine Coast got down to 6.1C, below its 11.3C average for the month.

Rockhampton fell to almost 6C below its June average of 11.1C, sitting on a chilly 5.3C, while the

Bureau of Meteorology senior meteorologist Daniel Hayes on Monday said cold conditions across Queensland would persist for most of the week.

“Maximum temperatures will likely stay below average and minimum temperatures will warm up by a few degrees throughout the week,” Mr Hayes said.
