Temperatures could plummet to below freezing bringing widespread frost to parts of southern Queensland in coming days.
The cold snap is being driven by a high centred near Victoria that is extending a ridge of high pressure and cool, dry conditions over most of Queensland.
Overnight minimums fell to as low as 1.5C in Applethorpe on the Granite Belt, while it got down to 9.9C at the Brisbane Airport.
They could get down to just 1C tonight on the Granite Belt and places across the Darling Downs like Oakey, Warwick and Roma, with subzero temperatures likely.
In Brisbane, the coldest it is expected to get is 9C overnight Tuesday, while Gatton could get as low as 5C.
Bureau of Meteorology senior meteorologist Daniel Hayes said cold conditions across Queensland would persist for most of the week.
“Maximum temperatures will likely stay below average and minimum temperatures will warm up by a few degrees throughout the week,” Mr Hayes said.
Mr Hayes added while frost was possible near the southern and central borders, snow was unlikely this early into the season.
“It would be pushing it, even with precipitation, and, when we do expect more precipitation later in the week, temperatures warm up by two or three degrees,” he said.
“Maybe later in the season.”
