With barely a sound or a splash, one-year-old Ella Zirps slipped off the side of the pool into the water as her dad helped big sister Keira, 3.
Ella was blue in the face and lifeless when Michael Zirps scooped her out of the backyard pool. Thankfully, long-time surf club member Mr Zirps and his brother-in-law Joel Chapman both know CPR and worked together to revive Ella who, after an agonising 2½ minutes, began to breathe again.
Paramedics said their quick actions saved Ella’s life and helped prevent any long-term health problems — and also earned them both a Pride of Australia nomination.
“Life has changed since realising how water is a silent killer and you can’t take your eyes of kids for a second,” Mr Zirps said, recalling the moment a nightmare scenario for any parent became terrifyingly real for him.
With only less than 10 per cent of Australians able to perform CPR, Mr Zirps said: “If there is a message that we can send to all Australians, is to please learn first aid and resuscitation and keep your skills up to date.
“Once again emphasising drowning is silent and remain alert at all times.”

“I am fortunate enough to see Ella grow everyday and embrace life to the fullest after her recovery,” Mr Zirps said.
“The incident has brought Joel and I closer as a result and Ella and Joel have an amazing bond.”
Mr Zirps said his children will be joining North Cronulla surf club this season and learning “vital life survival skills” and how to assist others.
