I could just see people running for their lives: "hero" firefighters describe the moment they chased down alleged Sydney CBD murderer

It was the moment that brought the city to a standstill.

Brandishing a bloodied butcher’s knife, a 20-year-old man ran through the streets of the Sydney CBD after allegedly murdering one woman and trying to kill another.

Step forward a group of everyday heroes.

Amid the danger and the chaos a group of bystanders came out of the woodwork to take the alleged attacker down and make the streets safe. All have now been nominated for a Pride of Australia award to recognise their bravery.

Jase Shore made headlines around the world when he was photographed using a milk crate to stop the man.

“I know now that my first response is to spring to action and I would put myself out there to try to help others around me regardless if I know them or not,” Mr Shore said yesterday.

The father-of-one and former soldier has bonded with Westpac IT Manager Jamie Ingram, who picked up a cafe chair and wielded it at the knifeman.

For Mr Ingram the first few days after the incident were “intense”.

“Once the attention quietened down life returned to normal pretty quickly and the world seemed to move on,” he said. “I guess being involved it stays with you longer.”

Four firefighters from Drummoyne — Gonzalo Herrera, Mitchell Bennetts, Bennett Gardiner and Mike Stuart — were sitting in traffic when they got out of their truck to chase and eventually detain the suspect.

“We had no hesitation in assisting on the day,” they said in a statement.

“We are trained to protect the irreplaceable and we were just doing our job.”

Only weeks later, all four fireys continued their heroics by pulling an elderly man from a burning home in Five Dock under difficult circumstances.

Nominations are open until October 21 at prideofaustralia.com.au.
