A former detective sergeant’s own battle with post-traumatic stress disorder led him to devote his life to saving others, and calling for more help for officers and other emergency workers.

Simon Gillard attempted suicide four times after a 16-year police career in which he investigated often distressing cases — including crimes against children — without a single debrief session.

“There’s a strong culture of officers not admitting to being affected by trauma due to the stigma attached to mental health issues,” Mr Gillard said.

“What is needed … is proactive care and early, ongoing intervention.”
