The NSW government will pump another $2.5 million into training and research facilities at the new $723m Tweed Valley Hospital at Cudgen ahead of is opening late this year.
The announcement comes as drone footage has been released showing progress on the build.
Funding will see TAFE NSW’s presence at the hospital expanded via an integrated clinical training and research space.
It is expected to include purpose built education and library facilities with direct access to clinical supervisors.
Meanwhile, the research hub is set to host multiple educational institutions to deliver the high quality health education.
The new funding comes after a controversial start to the hospital development on Cudgen Rd at Cudgen.
Former Mayor Katie Milne protested against the hospital being built at the site due to the loss of State Significant Farmland, but was ultimately unsuccessful.
Regarding the funding, Skills and Training Minister Alister Henskens said the government had an important role to play in training the next generation of skilled healthcare workers.
“This vital skilling infrastructure will be a critical tool to uplift and upskill all healthcare workers who share a common goal so that they can deliver the best possible care for their patients” he said.
Tweed MP Geoff Provest said the investment will allow students and clinicians to develop skills and increase their capacity to provide patient-centred care to the Tweed community.
“This is a critical first step in establishing an integrated training model that will deliver education of the highest quality to regional health care workers,” he said.
“The investment will see an enhanced TAFE NSW’s presence at the Tweed Valley Hospital’s Health Hub via an integrated clinical training and research space.”
Regional Health Minister Bronnie Taylor said the investment would arm healthcare professionals with the skills and knowledge to deliver the best possible care.
“The outcome will be multidisciplinary training that develops the Tweed region’s health workforce in high-demand skill areas such as nursing, midwifery, medicine and allied health” she said.
The new hospital is set to open in late-2023.
