Tweed flood funding boost as NSW and federal governments announce $70 million reprieve

Flood-ravaged public assets in parts of the Tweed will finally be repaired with a share of $70m funding. Here’s what’s planned.

Flood-ravaged community assets in parts of the Tweed will finally be repaired with a share of $70 million funding after record floods devastated the region early last year.

Tweed Shire Council mayor Chris Cherry said the 2022 floods impacted a wide range of infrastructure in Tweed, including council buildings and facilities.

She welcomed the joint NSW and federal government funding.

“This additional funding will certainly help in the repair of these vital community facilities, which play such an important role in the lives of so many people and which have been missed since they were damaged in the flood,” she said.

Facilities such as the Tweed Heads Library, Murwillumbah Community Centre, Murwillumbah sale yards, the Tweed Aquatic Centre and the fire control centre in Murwillumbah are due to be spruced up as part of flood restoration works.

More than $1.5 million has been locked in to help sporting clubs repair club facilities and relocate electrical boxes to higher locations.

It’s anticipated restoration of the Murwillumbah Community Centre will start later this month.

Member for Richmond Justine Elliot said the floods which ripped through the Tweed and swathes of northern NSW early last year caused devastating damage.

“This funding means that many of our vital community assets like parks, playgrounds and libraries can be repaired,” she said.

“The Albanese Government continues to work with the NSW Government, and all levels of government, to provide important support to communities like ours on the North Coast.”
