Aussie road rules you’ve probably never heard of

A Hervey Bay man who stole a BMW before leading police on a high speed chase to the state border hopes to be able to attend a diversionary centre.

Jake Ashley Clark, 30, previously pleaded guilty to assault with intent to take/drive motor vehicle, drive during disqualification, police pursuit and drive recklessly/furiously.

According to court papers Clark’s victim, 25, was at the Car Lover car wash on Dawson St, Lismore on October 2, sitting in the passenger seat of his BMW when Clarke entered into the passenger seat.

Clark said “how you going brother” before punching the victim on the side of the face, causing the victim to retreat.

He then sped off towards Conway St, meanwhile the victim flagged down police to inform them of the carjacking.

Clark was spotted on Wilson St Lismore before going onto Nimbin Road towards Nimbin.

Highway patrol attempted to catch up and stop the car, but it accelerated at high speeds driving dangerously so police stopped the pursuit.

Clarke was later seen driving towards Murwillumbah.

At around 3pm police travelling on Tweed Valley Way near Canes Road saw Clarke driving and attempted to pull him over.

Clark then accelerated harshly and overtaken cars on the wrong side of the road to evade police before a pursuit began.

He continued driving up to 200km/h in a 100km/h zone on both sides of the road before police lost sight of him and stopped the pursuit.

Later Clark was involved in a crash at Reedy Creek on the M1. He fled into bushland and was later arrested.

Checks showed Clark’s licence had expired in 2013 and he was further disqualified until 2036.

Clark’s case was mentioned in Tweed Heads Local Court on Wednesday where his lawyer asked for an adjournment to allow him to undertake an assessment to attend the Balund-a diversionary centre.

The case was relisted for January 17 where Clark is expected to appear by audio-visual link.
