The mother of allegedly murdered Newcastle woman Mackenzie Anderson has described the aftermath of her death as “the hardest” time of her life.
Ms Anderson was allegedly stabbed to death by her ex-boyfriend Tyrone Thompson at her home on Crebert St on Friday April 1, after the pair had spent time drinking together during the day.
Police allege Ms Anderson – who had a young son – was allegedly stabbed more than 20 times and had her head stomped on by Thompson, in one final act of abuse.
Her mother Tabitha Acret shared an emotional post on Instagram on Wednesday.
She thanked her friends for their support and providing them with a guide on how to best interact with her as she continues to come to terms with the tragedy.
“The last six weeks have been some of the hardest weeks of my life, but they have also provided moments of such love,” Ms Acret wrote.
“Thank you to all the people who have dropped off food, hugs, love and helped share tears.”
“It’s been greatly appreciated and has helped us feel not alone in this new journey.
“I know for many of you not knowing what to say or how to say it is a worry and I have listed some things below to help. Don’t avoid me, I know you may feel sad or worried about what to say but avoiding me or keeping your distance makes it worse.
“Again thank you for your love and support it’s made an unbearable situation survivable.”
The horrific death of Ms Anderson led to a massive outpouring of grief and calls for improvements to better protect domestic violence victims.
One idea raised was the potential for domestic violence offenders to wear ankle monitoring bracelets.
Thompson was arrested and taken to John Hunter Hospital with cuts to his hands.
He is next due back in Newcastle Local Court in relation to the charges on May 19.
