The news Aldi Goonellabah will transform with a massive revamp has shocked and delighted Northern Rivers residents.
It was announced the Goonellabah grocery store will close for a just under a fortnight as it undergoes a “comprehensive upgrade” worth $1.39 million.
New features include redesigned shelving, expanded wooden produce bays and more.
Dozens of readers commented and reacted on Northern Star’s Facebook post detailing the revamp.
However, not all shoppers were happy to see the space move into a more modern design.
“It is eventually going to get self service check outs and they will only accept cards. It’s already started in NSW,” Carolyn Fisher said.
“I hope they aren’t going to make it like the other new Aldis where the fruit and veg is at the start. So stupid. All the fruit then gets crushed by the cans and boxes. Goonellabah was the last of the old style and the best (except for the no alcohol bit)” Steve Eason said.
“Sad to see it change to the ‘new’ style,” Helen McNiven agreed.
Readers also flocked to tell us about the why they loved the Northern Rivers’ cult grocery store.
“Oh wow where do I start – almost everything,” Maralyn Sweeney said.
“Wine! We can’t get it in Qld and the $5 Pinot is great!” Danielle Andrews said.
“Knoppers (a wafer-type biscuit)” Jessy Rogers said
Meanwhile, some like Ez Mai couldn’t help but poke fun at the store’s more unconventional aspects when pointing out what they liked about it.
“The shopping trolleys, they are only $2. So cheap,” they joked.
The Goonellabah store will close temporarily from 5pm Thursday, June 24 and reopen on Saturday July 17.
