James Darren Mulry pleads guilty to possessing ice, marijuana

An ice user who says the drug ‘calms him down’ shared his fix with a neighbour. But he got more than he bargained for.

A Ballina man got more than he bargained for when he visited a neighbour in a local caravan park.

James Darren Mulry, 54, pleaded guilty in Ballina Local Court on Thursday for possessing methylamphetamine and marijuana.

He injected himself with ice along with neighbour Nicole Bennett at the Reflections Caravan Park in September court documents revealed.

The court heard Ms Bennett told police she and Mulry had injected themselves with ice.

But she later called for police to remove Mulry from her motorhome when he refused to leave.

Police attended the caravan park about 8.40pm on September 9 to find Mulry in his own motorhome.

Police executed a search and found four small clear resealable plastic bags, three of which contained a crystalline substance police alleged to be methylamphetamine.

Mulry then told police he had ice and marijuana in his front right pocket.

The court heard he told police he used ice as it ‘calms him down’.

When asked about the marijuana, Mulry told police Ms Bennett gave him the drug.

Mulry was arrested and taken to Ballina Police Station.

Magistrate Karen Stafford said she was not going to send Mulry to jail but would penalise him for the possession.

“You did plead guilty straight away,” she said.

“You co-operated with police. I am going to give you a fine.”

Mulry was convicted of two counts of possessing prohibited drug and ordered to pay $200 for each offence.
