A Richmond Valley man who sent over 100 vile and threatening text messages to his mother for not buying him a packet of cigarettes has learned his fate.

Heathen Clinton Charles Speedy, 30, of Casino was convicted of stalk/intimidate intend fear physical etc harm (domestic) in Casino Local Court.

The court heard Speedy is currently unemployed and lived with his mother in a Casino unit.

He receives $600 a fortnight from Centrelink and is working on starting up a custom clothing company where he earns $150 per week, court documents revealed.

On December 20, Speedy sent his mother a text message asking her to buy him a packet of cigarettes on her way home.

When she refused, he sent her 103 text messages over a two-hour period, police facts state.

Speedy texted: “You fat c--t, fat f--ker, fat dopey Jesus, U fat c--t why didn’t U drop smokes off, dopey c--t.

“Do you realise wats about to happen. I just smashed everything.

“I’m gonna get locked up here.”

Defence solicitor Belinda ‘Binnie’ O’Dwyer told the court Speedy “wasn’t thinking clearly before he sent the texts”.

“He is very remorseful,” Ms O’Dwyer said.

The prosecution told the court the sheer volume and content of the messages caused the victim to fear for her safety and that her property would be damaged by Speedy.

Ms O’Dwyer told the court Speedy “had learnt his lesson”, and had set up a job interview with a local bakery.

Speedy had also moved out from the victim’s unit and in with his aunt.

“This is your mother,” Magistrate Juliana Crofts said to Speedy. “She doesn’t deserve to have this directed at her.”

Ms Crofts said even though Speedy showed compliance she still needed to put provisions in place to protect the victim.

Speedy was convicted and sentenced to an 18-month conditional community correction order, including 50 hours of community service work.

Speedy was also placed on a two-year apprehended violence order.

“If your mum says ‘come home’, you say ‘no’, an AVL is in place,” Ms Crofts warned.
