Shonee Dillon Allston now eligible for parole in 2024

A young Ballina man who tried to escape the long arm of the law in a Mercedes will walk free from jail sooner than expected.

A West Ballina man who was convicted and jailed for multiple offences and outstanding warrants in February has appealed his sentence in Lismore District Court.

Shonee Dillon Allston, 27, was convicted in February of common assault, fail to appear in accordance with bail, carry cutting weapon upon apprehension, two counts of police pursuit not stop drive recklessly, and speeding by more than 45kmh.

Allston also entered guilty pleas to four counts of hinder or resist police officer in the execution of duty.

Police went to a property on Westlands Dr at West Ballina to arrest the unemployed man, who had three outstanding warrants, about 9pm on January 10.

Court documents state officers saw Allston run to a Mercedes Benz parked on the front lawn.

Police went after him and a struggle ensued as the officers tried to stop him starting the car.

Allston “thrashed about” and struggled violently against police, with the scuffle resulting in all involved tumbling to the ground, police facts detailed.

Officers eventually handcuffed Allston, finding a knife in his pocket.

Magistrate Roger Prowse sentenced Allston on February 9 to three years and two months jail with a non-parole period of two years and four months.

Mr Prowse disqualified Allston from holding a driving licence on the two counts of police pursuit fail to stop drive recklessly, for three and five years respectively.

Allston’s appeal was dismissed by Judge Jennifer English at Lismore District Court on March 28, but she varied the penalties.

Allston will now serve an aggregate term of imprisonment of two years and six months, with the non-parole period cut to 12 months.

Allston will be eligible for parole on February 8 next year.
