A Northern Rivers man who harassed an ex while on a community correction order for domestic violence has now failed in a bid to be freed from prison early after fleeing a unrelated crash.

Carl Remy John Maher, 34, of Lismore, was initially sentenced by Magistrate Michael Dakin on June 24 last year.

He was placed on an 18-month community corrections order for common assault, using a phone to harass or menace and contravening a domestic violence order.

While serving the correction order, he sent the former partner dozens of texts, threatening to break into her home while she slept and pouring a drink over her at a pub, Lismore Local Court heard.

Maher then faced Magistrate Karen Stafford in the court on June 18 this year and was convicted of not giving particulars to another driver and dangerous driving occasioning grievous bodily harm.

He was also convicted of failing to stop and assist after a crash causing injury and two counts of disqualified driving.

Furthermore, Maher was dealt with for common assault, using a carriage service to menace/harass/offend, using a carriage service to threaten to kill, using a carriage service to threaten serious harm and two counts each of breaching an apprehended violence order (AVO) and affray.

The correction order was revoked and Ms Stafford sentenced Maher to two years and six months behind bars with a year-long non-parole period.

The court heard Maher intended to appeal and on August 1 he faced Judge John Pickering in Lismore District Court.

Representing himself, Maher told the court he wanted to be released earlier than his December 11 parole date.

He told the court his father was dying and he wanted to be there for his family.

However, Maher’s case was dismissed in a short hearing and he was told he must wait.

Judge Pickering upheld Magistrate Stafford’s sentence. Maher is expected to be released to parole on December 11.
