A Byron Bay man has walked from court after harassing a woman with dozens of texts, threatening to break into her home while she slept and pouring a drink over her at a pub.

Carl Remy John Maher faced Lismore Local Court pleading guilty to common assault, using a phone to harass or menace and contravening a domestic violence order.

The 33-year-old sent the woman about 50 texts, abusing and threatening her, and labelling her a “s--t”, on December 18 last year.

Maher told the woman she should be “sorry for what she did”.

“Please don’t contact me again”, she replied several times – but Maher sent her more abusive messages, court documents state.

The victim visited Lismore pub Mary G’s to have a “civil conversation” with Maher about his “extensive harassment” over the “rekindling of their relationship” about 4pm on the day.

She noticed Maher was drunk and found he became “increasingly irate” when she tried to speak to him, the court was told.

Maher continued to verbally abuse the woman, accusing her of being unfaithful.

He followed behind, continuing to harass the woman, as she made her way to a pokies room.

Maher then poured a drink over her and a pokie machine, drenching her clothing.

The incident at Mary G’s occurred over about 10 minutes and was witnessed by staff, patrons and captured on CCTV.

Staff were forced to evict Maher from Mary G’s because of his “aggression and intoxicated state”.

Police spotted Maher walking along Dawson St, Lismore and placed him under arrest.

He was “aggressive and non-compliant” while in custody, police state.

Magistrate Michael Dakin sentenced Maher to an 18-month community corrections order.
