Readers have call for another pedestrian crossing on Molesworth St in Lismore.

Following a tragic incident recently, where a pedestrian died after being hit by a car on Molesworth St in Lismore, we asked our readers if there were any spots in the town that needed a pedestrian crossing.

Many discussed the dangers of trying to cross busy roads and agreed a crossing was needed on Molesworth St near Lismore Clinic.

The section of road south of the CBD had no pedestrian crossings, despite being the location of the Memorial Baths, the City Hall, and Heritage Park.

Carparking was available near those locations, but did not help those travelling by foot.

The closest pedestrian crossing to the Lismore Clinic on Molesworth St was about 400m away at the intersection with Magellan St.

While traffic islands are located along the busy road to help people cross safely, readers say more needed to be done.

Darrell Ward said: “A lot of people struggle to cross the road at the Molesworth St Clinic”, and Jodie Davis agreed.

Vivienne King said: “It’s time for Lismore to get traffic lights”.

Ann Campbell said: “It is an absolute nightmare getting across the highway on the corner of Dawson Street and Ballina Road. I feel as if I take my life in my own hands when I cross. Some drivers just come into that roundabout as if it was a speedway and the view for a pedestrian is blocked to a certain extent with the garden in the roundabout. I don’t think they consider pedestrians anymore. If you don’t drive you don’t matter”.

Nikki Mcguire said: “Dawson St / Ballina Road is a nightmare for our beautiful elderly neighbours to cross. Also mums with prams or our children trying to cross this hazard safely”.

Tammy Stace said: “Would be good especially in shopping centre car parks to have an empty car space on either side of the crossing so people can be seen when waiting and not hidden behind parked cars. Can stand there for ages sometimes before some one sees you and stops”.

Katie Eggins said a pedestrian crossing was need on Gordon Blair Drive, or an underpass: “So many go to fast around round about and speed down the hill to the shops! I’ve seen/had so many near misses … there are a lot of school kids trying to cross and the pedestrians are cautious but it is near impossible to cross safety being high traffic area and speeding!”.

Shannon Kelly said: “There are plenty of spots for pedestrian overpasses in Lismore. If the council put a few of them in, traffic and people could keep flowing”.
