Quick thinking onlookers and surf lifesavers saved a North Coast surfer who was caught in dangerous surf on New Year’s Eve.
The surfboard rider was enjoying the waves at about 1pm Friday at North Wall Ballina, towards the southern end of Lighthouse Beach when he was caught by a rip, according to Far North Coast Surf Life Saving Branch Duty Officer Chris Samuels.
Luckily, lifeguards were still on patrol at the time and commenced a rescue as soon as they were notified.
A member of the public also assisted in the rescue, using his jetski to bring the surfer back to shore.
Mr Samuels said the successful rescue took between 10 and 15 minutes.
Police and NSW ambulance were notified and the surfer was assessed on scene for injuries but the patient walked away.
Westpac Helicopter Rescue was also tasked but later stood down.
