While the Australian sporting community were abuzz at reports two of the country’s star athletes were spotted out on a date, sources have confirmed it was “just ice cream.”
Football fans lost their minds at rumours which surfaced earlier in the week, suggesting rugby league ace Nathan Cleary and Matildas football superstar Mary Fowler are in a relationship.
The dating whispers emerged after World Cup footballer Fowler was spotted “enjoying an ice cream” one-on-one with the Penrith Panthers halfback.
The couple, who are both sponsored by Adidas, were seen walking together after attending a promotional event for the sporting apparel giant.
While neither have publicly commented about their relationship, a source has told The Daily Telegraph Cleary denies any romantic relationship with Fowler and the outing was a simple catch-up.
Both Fowler, 20 and Cleary, 25 follow each other on Instagram, with Cleary having ‘liked’ a number of the footballer’s posts, but the sport stars have not shared any photos together.
Cleary is one of the few 747 people Fowler follows, despite having over 240,000 followers herself after reportedly experiencing the highest percentage growth since the commencement of the World Cup in July, gaining 174,413 new followers over the four weeks.
Reports of the union came to light on Tuesday on the Hello Sport podcast.
“If you’re having an ice cream with someone, that’s saying something. You may as well be holding hands,” host Eddy Simpson said.
“Unless they’re doing an ice cream commercial then they’re essentially dating.”
While confirmation of relationship would have sent shockwaves through Australian sporting fan groups, the couple would have likely had to do long distance.
The Matildas key forward is set to return overseas to her home in the UK to resume her playing football for Manchester City in the English Women’s Super League, following the Matildas history making FIFA Women’s World Cup performance.
NSW Blues State of Origin icon Cleary is poised to lead Penrith to what could be their third consecutive premiership, in the coming weeks.
The news of the ice-cream date, comes just a year after Cleary split from Sydney pilates instructor and model Teah Foot in what has been described as a on-again, off-again relationship.
