Authorities issued a road weather alert as flash flooding caught motorists off guard but a man ignored warnings and had to be rescued after driving into water on Balgowlah Road in Manly.

“We have a very simple slogan: if it’s flooded, forget it,” SES spokeswoman Natasha Wainberg warned.

“His car became stuck and couldn’t be safely removed, he was told to abandon the car.

“We had 35 requests for assistance and 22 of those were storm related, (with) three flood rescues involving vehicles in Randwick, Eastgardens and in Manly.”

“We had a coastal trough sitting offshore and that generated showers which moved over the Sydney area,” she said.

“It’ll be clearing off into Tuesday, for Wednesday we’re not actually expecting many showers at all.”
