Harry’s Cafe de Wheels to open at Pennant Hills, Baulkham Hills, Kogarah

It’s the perfect comfort food for road trips or hangovers and now commuters can get their fix of Harry’s Cafe de Wheels’ pies, hot dogs and hot chips when it rolls out its retro-inspired “pit stop” diners to Pennant Hills, Baulkham Hills and Kogarah.

An “in and out’’ shop at Yarrara Rd, Pennant Hills, will open opposite the train station at the end of April and will seat eight customers; some who will be perched on a few retro-inspired stainless stools like those found at the Woolloomooloo flagship trailer.

The eatery is smaller compared with its Greystanes and Bligh Park cousins, which opened in 2021, but shares its diminutive status with the St Marys Harry’s that is part of the BP service station.

That won’t mean customers will leave hungry. Indeed, they should probably don some elastic waist pants. The signature pies can be knocked back with bold sides – chilli chips, anyone? Or meatball chips with gravy, cheese sauce and fried onions, perhaps? There’s also extra loaded fries with pulled pork and roast chicken.

The classic pea filling is also stuffed into hot dog buns or diners can opt for the Hot dog de Wheels (chilli con carne, mushy peas, onions, chilli and cheese). Desserts include raspberry cheesecake and vanilla tarts.

The Pennant Hills Harry’s will open in late April and employ eight staff.

It’s been a long time between hearty Harry’s pies for many Hills and Hornsby fans, who were among the most loyal customers to swarm the now-defunct North Parramatta Harry’s trailer after Eels matches.

The truck’s Church St location was a convenient spot for those heading home via Pennant Hills and Windsor roads but the start of the Parramatta light rail spelt its demise.

Luckily, Harry’s is also expanding at Baulkham Hills in May.

“We have received a lot of demand from customers to open up in the northern parts of Sydney, such as the Hills area and Hornsby, and want to bring the products our customers love close to them,’’ a Harry’s spokeswoman said.

“Additionally there’s not many good Aussie snacks and treats around the area, so we wanted to proudly bring them more to the forefront.’’

The Kogarah Town Centre pit stop is slated to open in May.

There will be limited seating but a huge menu including pies, hot dogs and desserts.

Harry’s has 14 branches in Sydney and one in Newcastle. Franchise opportunities on the Gold Coast, Sunshine Coast, Brisbane and Victoria are in the pipeline.

Harry’s is a Sydney institution and developed its legendary status for attracting A-listers including Frank Sinatra, Anthony Bourdain, Prince Harry, Russell Crowe and Elton John, who flocked to the original Woolloomooloo trailer.

The business opened there in 1936 when Harry “Tiger’’ Edwards met the needs of cabbies, cops, soldiers and sailors from the nearby naval dockyard to refuel with a late-night feed.
