A Clarence Valley man became “agitated” after his mum invited him to her home to pick up some leftover dinner, slapping her across the face and breaking her furniture.

South Grafton man Geoffrey Budden, 24, fronted Grafton Local Court on Monday.

He pleaded guilty to common assault, damaging property and contravening an apprehended domestic violence order (ADVO).

Budden’s mother was eating dinner with a friend on the evening of May 13.

She contacted her son and asked if he would like to collect some leftover food, according to documents tendered to court.

But Budden’s mother noticed he appeared “irritable” when he arrived at the home.

“A short time later the victim and (Budden) engaged in a verbal argument,” police facts state.

“During the verbal argument, (Budden) became agitated and the victim requested for him to leave her residence.”

However, Budden did not leave and his mother heard a loud “thud noise”.

She observed a 15cm hole in the linen cupboard door and Budden standing next to it, the court heard.

“(The mum) told Budden to ‘get out, get out now’ and ask her friend to phone police for help, the documents state.

“The victim and (Budden) walked back into the lounge room, continuing the verbal argument,” police state.

“(She asked him) to leave on multiple occasions before Budden, using an open right hand, slapped the victim to the left hand side of her face, causing her left cheek to immediately sting.”

Budden left the home about 9pm.

In court, Magistrate Juliana Crofts described the offending as “serious” and said a sentencing assessment report should be prepared.

She told the court Budden had only recently been granted bail at Port Macquarie Local Court.

Budden is due to return to court for sentencing on June 30.
