Byron has become known as a playground for the rich and a mecca for the nation’s “wellness” community. But, if you’re after something cheap and tasty that might stretch your waistband, here are some meals that won’t break the bank.

Byron Bay has turned into a luxury destination populated by the mega rich and white clad influencers who spend their day eating over-priced lettuce on Main Beach.
But while Byron prices might be prohibited to most locals, cash strapped tourists and backpackers, we sourced the best Byron meals where you get the most bang for you dollar.
Mexican
Chihuahua Taqueria is the place to go for authentic Mexican cuisine.
It’s an unassuming joint and not going to kill your post party hunger, but this cute Mexican is good for lunch and a light dinner.
Tacos start at $8- 9 for one or for $15-17 for two.
Burgers
For a burger with a Portuguese twist that won’t bankrupt you, Beloporto Burgers is a great option.
Their burgers start from just $13, a rarity in Byron’s oft over-priced hipster eateries.
Their hot chilli sauce is one to try with the Belo chicken burger.
Asian:
Success Thai near Main beach is tasty and reasonably priced if take-out at the beach is your jam.
Takeaway lunches are $15.
Vietnamese:
For cheap, fresh Asian street food with plenty of raw veg, Foxy Luu’s is a great option.
It’s good for a date and keeps it simple.
Their dumplings are $2 each, while bao buns are less than $7 each.
Chinese:
Red Ginger has all your Chinese needs in one – offering cheap food as well as Asian groceries and homewares.
Entering the shop feels like being transported into Shanghai.
They offer yum-cha to take away and cook at home with delicious $2 dumplings.
Middle Eastern
Orgasmic foods offer great value for money and serve mixed plates, with all the Levantine staples like falafel, pickled cucumber and hummus.
A mainstay in Byron, Orgasmic foods has withstood everything Covid threw at it.
If you’re new to falafels, it’s an ideal place to try them – $8.50 will get you half a pocket or $16 for a full pocket.
The homemade lemonade is a yummy extravagance.
The legend that is Bay Kebabs has been feeding that good old Aussie dish- the Kebab- to hungry tourists and Byron natives for over 20 years. This one was big with cash strapped backpackers. Remember them?
Kebabs start at $14 – served with sauces that are either created in house or cooked up down the road in Byron industrial estate.
Japanese
For freshly rolled sushi, Street Suhi is a great shout, offering $11 sushi meals.
They also offer varied bento boxes and operate as a juice bar – with fresh and cheap options if you’re feeling healthy.
Indian
The Cardamom Pod Vegetarian serve well portioned Indian meals.
Small plates start at $12.50- a bargain!
Pizza / Pub
Tucked away in a side street just off the main beach, Slice Pizzeria offer affordable pizza.
Small margherita pizzas are $10, or for $14 you can get some decent toppings.
With over 20 tap beers on offer, The Railway Friendly Bar – The Rails to locals – is a great venue to get a cheap pub feed with some live music.
If features an outdoor area and a beer garden, where you can enjoy unpretentious yet tasty pub feeds from $16 and listen to locals chatter over a 60’s cover band.
Dessert
If you fancy something sweet Love Crêperie & Chocolate Boutique has got you.
With a French touch – using couverture chocolate – these crepes are well worth stopping for.
They start at $8 for the original butter and sugar or lemon and sugar combo
