Thousands of North Coast residents have come out in full force to commemorate Anzac Day.

For many, it was an emotional one, paying tribute to the servicemen and women who weeks ago helped them escape flood heartbreak.

For others, the remembrance was a pressing reminder of the folly and tragedy of war.

Alstonville welcomed hundreds of people onto Main Street for a parade which featured ex-servicemen, their families, friends and representatives from schools from across the region.

The Alstonville sub-branch celebrated its 103rd anniversary and honoured the 136 soldiers from the small Northern Rivers town to have fallen in battle for Australia.

The commemorative ceremony was headlined by an incredible story by a student from St. Joseph’s Primary School who gave the audience a shock with his powerful words.

In Ballina, River St was lined with Australian flags as onlookers paid their respects to Australia’s servicemen and women.

It was the first march in two years due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Ballina RSL sub-Branch President Dick Wills took the time to praise the work of the Defence Force, SES and frontline workers who worked so “tirelessly” during the floods and pandemic.

In Lismore, many Lismore residents braved the crisp cool morning to attend the dawn service held at Lismore Memorial Baths.

A procession of veterans marched along Molesworth street under police escort.

The dawn service in Lismore brought out a larger than expected gathering with Lismore RSL sub-branch secretary Wilson McClelland praising the efforts of the community alongside members of the local 41st Battalion, Royal NSW regiment.

Four local high school representatives shared prayers for our fallen, for peace, and blessing.
