After two years of limited Anzac services, hundreds of Ballina Shire residents turned out to remember our fallen soldiers this April 25.
River St was lined with families to commemorate the Australians who risked their lives for our freedom.
In his Anzac Day address, Major Alex Rubin who led the Australian Defence Force team in the 2018 Thai cave rescue and fought in the Solomon Island, East Timor, Afghanistan, Syria and Lebanon, told listeners to think of the story of Tuckombil man Henry Elvery who gave up his farming aspirations to fight.
Out of his platoon, only 11 of 30 soldiers would survive and young Henry died in trenches of Pozieres.
“And Henry says we have given over our lives to bring freedom to you so take this freedom and protect it as we are no longer able to do so,” Mjr Rubin said.
“Then use this freedom to build a better world.”
Ballina RSL sub-Branch President Dick Wills also took the time to praise the work of the Defence Force, SES and frontline workers who worked so “tirelessly” during the floods and pandemic.
“Today it is also appropriate to include and thank all the Australian Navy, Army and Airforce personnel who recently served here and locally assisted Ballina and our neighbouring communities during and after the floodwaters receded,” he said.
“Ballina and our neighbours shall never forget them.”
