Revenue NSW has revealed how many Hinterland Way speeding fines have been withdrawn since a technical issue was identified

A large number of people reported dodgy, inaccurate fines as a result of a technical problem causing faulty readings from a fixed speed camera located on Hinterland Way near Byron Bay.

Bizarre road rules that carry big fines

Revenue NSW has for weeks been tight-lipped on how many fines have been reviewed or withdrawn after a fault was identified with the fixed speed camera on Hinterland Way near Ewingsdale.

But the department has now confirmed more than 1000 people were impacted by a technical fault in the camera.

“Approximately 1200 impacted fines have been withdrawn and customers have been notified,” a Revenue NSW spokeswoman said.

Motorists flagged the issue after a large number of people were surprised by fines, some of them citing speeds well over the 60km/h limit, particularly from a date in early April.

Byron Shire man Samuel Anthonyz was among those to raise concerns about the speed camera after his household received a $490 fine attached to an alleged speed of 84km/h, which he says he disproved with the photos of his vehicle linked to the fine and calculations related to the distance travelled.

Mr Anthonyz said this fine had been withdrawn and he knew of about 60 people who had the same result.

“We asked for a review of our fine as did many others … who all cited the same reasons,” he said.

“They withdrew our fine and as far as I know anyone else’s fine around the same time.”

But he said the letter he received made no explicit reference to a technological problem.

“The letter they sent just said we were issued the fine incorrectly,” he said.

“They didn’t acknowledge that they had carried out a review nor that there was a fault with the camera system.”

A Transport for NSW spokeswoman confirmed technicians were on site in the week of May 17 to 21.

She said at that time, they were working “to replace the affected hardware”.

“This was a localised and isolated hardware issue only,” she said.

“Following this, full testing and recertification of the camera will ensure community confidence in the system before enforcement restarts.”

Revenue NSW, the department responsible for the reviews, took more than two weeks to confirm how many fines had been withdrawn.
