Transport for NSW has confirmed it is conducting a review of a prominent Northern Rivers speed camera after reports of inaccurate readings resulting in unfair fines.
A wave of people claimed to have been incorrectly nabbed for speeding past the camera on Hinterland Way between Ewingsdale and Bangalow, including a group who all received fines from their travels on April 8.
Samuel Anthonysz received a huge response when he began an online discussion about the camera, believing it was faulty.
His wife is certain she was under the 60km/h speed limit when she passed the camera on April 8, but received a stunning $490 fine for allegedly travelling at 84km/h.
Mr Anthonysz has been crunching the numbers to prove his wife and other motorists were below the speed limit at the time.
A Transport for NSW spokeswoman said a review of the camera was in progress.
“The integrity of Transport for NSW’s speed camera systems is of the utmost importance,” she said.
“In the rare event that a localised issue is identified, any penalties are carefully reviewed.
“Pending the outcome of the review of this camera, if any issue is found with its operations, penalties will be withdrawn to ensure that no motorist is inappropriately penalised.
“Before restarting enforcement, any required maintenance activity will be carried out before rigorous testing and device recertification.”
