Brazilian national drowns, another hospitalised in drowning tragedy at New Brighton Beach in Byron Shire

A Brazilian man believed to be a holidaymaker has drowned and another has been hospitalised after he embarked on a valiant rescue attempt on a dangerous stretch of Byron beach.

A Brazilian national believed to be a tourist has drowned and another has been hospitalised after he tried in vain to save his countryman on a dangerous stretch of Byron Shire beach.

New information has come to light about the drowning at New Brighton Beach, north of the popular holiday hub of Byron Bay, about 1pm on Monday.

Emergency services were called to the beach following reports a man collapsed after returning to shore and another was unresponsive when he was pulled from the water.

The 27-year-old man Brazilian national who lost his life was caught in a rip and a 28-year-old Brazilian who rushed to help ran into trouble.

Surf lifesavers and an off-duty nurse fought to save the life of the younger man after he was hauled to shore, performing CPR until NSW Ambulance paramedics arrived.,

However, the swimmer could not be revived.

The older Brazilian man was taken to Tweed Hospital in a stable condition.

A Surf Life Saving NSW spokesperson said conditions in the ocean were hazardous and the men were at an unpatrolled section of beach.

New Brighton Beach between Black Rock near Pottsville south to Brunswick Heads is particularly dangerous and there has been multiple emergencies, including drownings, in the area over the past decade.

Meanwhile, there was another emergency involving a swimmer at North Kingscliff beach about the same time on Monday.

A person was reportedly removed from the water with no feeling in their lower body after they were dumped by a wave and seemingly suffered a spinal injury,

They were taken to Tweed Hospital for assessment and treatment, the Surf Life Saving spokesperson said.

A large swell caused by a low off the coast of Queensland was still causing hazardous conditions on Tuesday morning.

“There are still numerous beaches closed along the North Coast,” the spokesperson said.

“We're asking people to take care because beach conditions will be very unstable over the coming days.”
