Cameron Piper: police seek AVO against Skennars Head man

A NSW North Coast man will fight police’s efforts to hit him with an apprehended violence order after an alleged incident in which his lawyer acknowledged his partner was injured.

A NSW North Coast man will fight police efforts to impose him with an apprehended violence order after an alleged incident in which a woman was injured.

Cameron Piper, 30, faced Ballina Local Court on September 8 as police sought an apprehended violence order for the protection of his partner, who attended court with him.

Piper is not facing any criminal charges in relation to the alleged incident and police confirmed there would be no future criminal proceedings against him beyond the AVO application.

Through his solicitor, Piper had indicated his intention to oppose the AVO, before magistrate Karen Stafford ordered him to go and liaise further with his lawyer after the court heard there was allegedly an injury to the woman for whom the order is sought.

“There are always two sides to a story, but there is one injury,” Ms Stafford said.

“Something led (the woman) to call the police – can we find out, is there an order that everyone can live with?”

Piper’s lawyer Rob Manitta, told the court a “situation built up” before police arrived and “certain aggressive behaviour” was “self-defence”.

“The standard of proof is not proved beyond reasonable doubt – it is on balance,” Ms Stafford said.

“Has something happened that on reasonable grounds made her fearful for her safety?”

Mr Manitta said he had a lengthy conversation with Piper as to his legal instructions.

“The alleged actions are completely denied – the injury is not denied, but the events as described in the matter are denied,” Mr Manitta told the court.

Piper elected to proceed with his opposition to the AVO and Ms Stafford adjourned the matter for mention at Ballina Local Court on October 20.
