Police have been spotted examining a firearm near a crime scene linked to a gym shooting which saw a bikie boss severely injured and his brother killed.

A burnt firearm has been recovered near a carfire that may be linked to the shooting against Comanchero Bikie Boss, Tarek Zahed, 42, and his younger brother, Omar Zahed, 39.

Forensic police were seen inspecting a burnt handgun and two bullets which were found near an Audi Q7 vehicle in the western Sydney suburb of Berala, The Australian reports.

Police are investigating whether the vehicle - along with another burnt out Audi Q7 set alight in the nearby suburb of Greenacre - is connected to the shooting which took place outside the Bodyfit gym in Auburn.

From Auburn, Berala and Greenacre are a respective 2.8km and 8.5km away.

Since the shooting, special forensic officers have established multiple crime scenes. The newly established Strike Force Leary is also targeting known members and associates of involved criminal networks.

The violent attack saw Omar die at the scene after going into cardiac arrest. His brother, Tarek also suffered 10 gunshot wounds to his body and head and was taken to Westmead Hospital, where he continues to be in a serious but stable condition after he was placed into an induced coma.

Mistake brothers made before gym shooting

This comes as a Sydney gangster has said that the actions of Tarek and Omar in the days before the death put their lives at risk.

Speaking to The Daily Telegraph, gangster, who was not identified, claimed the marked brothers’ routines were known by their associates and enemies.

This was despite Tarek having a seven-figure bounty on his death – and cops warning him about it just days earlier.

“Anyone with a hit on their head makes sure they don’t have a routine,” the source said.

“But Tarek f----d it, the dumb c--- said he was going to gym last night, like he did the same time the night before, the night before and the nights before.”

‘They don’t have control of it’

Appearing on Today on Thursday morning, former NSW senior detective Peter Moroney said that when it comes to the gang violence, it appears the police do not have a handle on the situation, though he admitted it wasn’t just a “police problem”.

“Obviously the shootings are continuing, so they don’t have control of it. It is not just a police problem,” he said.

“Sure the police are at the tip of the spear to fight it but the people in those circles they run in, they’ve got to come in.”

Sharing insight from his time on the force, Mr Moroney said the increased violence and shootings will also decrease the amount of tip-offs authorities may receive.

“When you’re dealing with the violence we’re dealing with, that’s going to be drastically reduced,” he said.

“They would be walking in this morning and unfortunately their white boards would be getting populated with more and more people being killed.

“It begs the question: How long is this going to go for?”

Tarek’s death comes just weeks after the shooting of Sydney underworld figure Mahmoud “Brownie” Ahmad. The notorious gangland figure was killed in a spray of bullets outside his friends house in Sydney’s southwest suburb of Greenacre.

Detectives are investigating whether the two incidents are linked.

‘If we had the evidence, they’d be locked up’

Speaking on Wednesday, Police Commissioner Karen Webb said police had approached the brothers and encouraged them to leave the state just last Thursday after it became known their lives were under threat.

Despite this, it was not disclosed who or what association made the threats, or where police received this information.

Still, it appears the brothers did not heed the warnings. While it was quickly deleted, in the two days before his death, Omar had shared footage of himself and Tarek posing in front of the mirrors at Bodyfit gym.

“If we had the evidence [to charge someone with conspiracy to murder] they’d be locked up, but our job is to prevent crime,” said Commissioner Webb.

“I can’t help people that can’t help themselves.”

Tarek is a known senior member of the Comanchero Bikie gang. Since the organisation’s current president Mick Murray was put in remand over murder charges, Tarek was believed to be a top choice to take over the position.

In the wake of the most recent shooting, NSW Police Minister Paul Toole vowed to “hunt down” the perpetrators. A joint Strike Force Leary has been established, which includes officers from the Auburn Police Area Command and South West Metropolitan Region, Criminal Groups and Raptor Squads.

“The simple message is, if you are part of Sydney’s underworld, we are going to hunt you down and stamp out this kind of activity,” said Mr Toole on Wednesday.

“We will kick down doors, raid homes, raid businesses, we will harass you, disrupt your everyday life to stamp this activity out.”
