AUVERS CAFE

ORDER a coffee in their custom-made stoneware, grab a seat and strangely enough, you’ll get a slight sense of home. Co-owners Ron Chen and Leo Rong have worked with designers to create a space that is subtly comforting — from the lush loungeroom curtains to the calming loops of the overhead LED lights and even the chic shelves tactfully arranged with works from local artisans. Ron sees Auvers, named after an art-centric town outside Paris, as a cafe where food and art come full circle — nowhere is this more evident than with the creative approach they’ve taken to breakfast staples such as adding a sweet corn miso to the smashed avo or using soft shell crab as a variant to the New Orleans classic, a Po Boy sandwich. — 2/ 42 Walker St

AYADA THAI

THE dark long tables, neon lights, and enticing smells of Kaffir lime may elicit visions of Thai street markets, but the food and drinks that come out of the kitchen here are more akin to high-street dining. The Tub-Tim Grob, a hot weather treat with coconut milk and crunchy ruby-red water chestnuts usually served in plastic cups, is presented here in a glass bell jar with a sprig of mint and silver ladle. The deep- fried barramundi with chilli (pictured) is equally as glam, as is the sweet and tangy papaya salad, with its vibrant colours of fresh produce which is so indicative of Thai cuisine. — 72/Level 1, Rhodes Shopping Centre, 1 Rider Blvd

A COVETED breakfast spot for the fitness folk after a run around the bay or those looking to linger over lunch with gin and juniper ocean trout and a glass of chardonnay. “We wanted to create a place that was a release from the concrete jungle,” co-owner Clovice Khachan said. “Something fresh and different. Something left of field.” While the space is indeed special, it’s the food that is the real draw. A variant of eggs with toast gets a bit decadent with the rich flavour of a fried duck egg served over asparagus and mushrooms. For something sweeter, there’s the always popular hot cakes with caramelised banana and earl grey custard. — 3/7 Gauthorpe St

NO.1 MALATOWN

POPULAR in China, Malatang shops are where customers choose their own ingredients and have them cooked on the spot. Starting with a bucket-sized bowl and a pair of tongs, patrons head to the refrigerated shelves laden with plastic bins and choose from a variety of meats, vegetables, noodles and greens. The price of the meal is based on the weight of the bowl. Its contents are then tossed into a pot and either served “dry” or, by adding a secret broth, served as a “wet” soup. Add some extra sauce or spice — it’s your call. — 5/42 Walker St

CO-OWNER Sav Sivakumar has not only adjusted the menu to his market, but has also added a bar and some tunes for the later hours. There’s also a wood-fire oven for their popular pizzas such as The Fisherman with prawns, calamari, rocket and chilli or the seasonal one with fig and prosciutto. — 83/Level 1, Rhodes Shopping Centre, 1 Rider Blvd
