GRAPE GARDEN BEIJING CUISINE
THERE is no place like home and fortunately for scores of international students and Chatswoodeans alike, they don’t need to click their heels together to tuck into some traditional home-cooked Chinese cuisine. The sign on Katherine Gao’s parents Jie and Lun’s shop reads Grape Garden but regulars know it as Old Beijing. They’re famous for their hand-pulled noodles — a basic dough that is rolled into a rope, folded in half, twisted then rolled out again. There is a glass cabinet filled with all sorts of side dishes that are typically eaten at home. From chicken feet to pickled lotus roots, they may not be for everyone, but give them a try — you might surprise yourself. — Lemon Grove Shopping Centre, 427-441 Victoria Ave
ONE TEA GRILL
DAVID Yip has created a burger that’s a fusion between East and West — the Ramen Burger, a noodle bun burger infused with ramen soup sauce which is crispy on the outside, yet the noodles are still soft and moist on the inside. This tasty concoction is the big seller at the relatively recent takeaway version of his flagship CBD venue, ONE Tea Lounge & Grill that opened after the burger’s 2013 debut at the Night Noodle Markets. Check out any foodie Instagram feed and you’ll see that this baby burger and the ice cream “Baoger” have a near cult following. — Shop FM11 Westfield Hawker Lane
POP-UP FOOD ON A ROLL
CHANGE is good, particular when it comes to temping your tastebuds. That’s what makes the proliferation of pop-up shops so enticing. There’s always going to be something new to try and quite often, they’re as quirky and fun as they are yum and Westfield Chatswood is making a point to feature as many as possible such as Cream’d Ice Cream that serves rolled ice cream. Many of the pop-ups are seasonal but considering their novel nature, you wouldn’t be surprised to learn they are in the inspiration for hundreds of funky food photos on Instagram and the food trucks of Facebook. — Westfield Chatswood, 1 Anderson St
CHATSWOOD MALL MARKET
THERE is nothing fresher than a cup of cane juice from Tall Grass Cane Juice. The staff cut and grind the cane on the spot and serve it over ice or blended as a frappé. Lemon and ginger are often added to cut the sweetness of Australia’s famous natural sugar. Tall Grass Cane Juice is just one of many vendors at the Chatswood Mall Markets, where twice-weekly stallholders sell everything fresh from Asian greens to Spanish paella and even takoyaki, a Japanese snack filled with mincemeats. — Victoria Ave, Thursday and Fridays, 9am — 9pm
HAWKER LANE
THERE is something special about the hustle and bustle of a busy Asian street market. Hawker’s Lane — part of Westfield’s “Food Trail” that runs from the sit-down dining options to the food trucks on Charlotte Lane — delivers the whole experience. There’s a vast array of eats including the Saigon specialty pho noodle soup from Madam Nhu and fried giant squid from Cheers Cut. — Westfield Chatswood, 1 Anderson St

PRAWN AND CHORIZO ROLL

XIAO LONG BAO

PISTACHIO GELATO
There’s a variety of flavours on offer, but owner Luca’s preference is for hazelnut or pistachio as both nuts are imported direct from Italy. — GelatEria Gondola, 2/77 Archer St
