RISTRETTO & CO
THERE are few things more important to Frank Angilletta than food and family. So much so he moved his business from the city back home to Liverpool in 2012 to fix his “work-life balance.”
And he’s helped reinvigorate the cafe scene, building a modest venue into a caffeinated oasis with towering hedges that surround an outdoor patio with rustic furniture.
Frank is clearly committed to the community, and with the help of Liverpool City Council, he has also converted an old shed into a takeaway, serving good coffee, breakfast and lunch.
Start your morning with a croissant with smoked ham and provolone, for lunch treat yourself to a generous panini. — 156 Northumberland St
D’ROOST
YOU can tell a good Lebanese restaurant by the quality of it’s garlic sauce and D’Roost is among the best.
Not only is theirs a delicious compliment to their charcoal-barbecued chicken but so moorish you can’t help but take a container home.
D’Roost boasts an extensive menu of dishes, including a mixed plate comprising lamb, chicken and kafta skewers, with sides of tabouli, baba ghanoush, garlic sauce, fried kibbeh, and sambousek.
Try the mansef, a rice dish topped with either chicken or lamb, pine nuts and yoghurt. Adjoining the restaurant is its popular cafe where locals sit back enjoying their shisha pipes. — 129 Terminus St
GEMELLE RISTORANTE
HOMEMADE pasta. Enough said! Offering quality Italian food in Liverpool is something that the Sofi family has been dishing up for more than 20 years.
But with a relatively recent and very sophisticated makeover, Gemelle Ristorante’s new elegance has brought city-style dining to
the suburbs.
The polished stone walls and blonde hardwood floors are well suited to the impressive menu featuring their famous meat and seafood selections.
Yet with all that elegance, they’ve still embraced the magic of fresh pastas, which they make in-house then add modern twists to create different specials every week. — 79 Bathurst St
ABLA’S PATISSERIE
THE baking pans upon baking pans of amazing sweets are the unmissable highlight of Alba’s.
Don’t miss the namoura, a semolina sugar cake adorned with almonds and crushed nuts. So simple yet so decadent.
Grab a tray for guests or maybe something bigger, like the basket filled with Alba’s own chocolates.
They also put together ”boats” of sweets which are great for parties but they’re also a traditional Lebanese gift to bring to a new mother in the hospital so that she in turn has treats to hand out to visitors ... or not. — 335 Macquarie St
THE SHISHA SPOT
IT’S not for everyone but The Shisha Spot is an interesting stop. Manager Landy Hana explains that it’s quite customary for people to come in after a meal, and linger for hours, talking, playing cards, drinking coffee and for some, smoking flavoured tobacco such as lemon and mint or even bubblegum, through ornate hookahs. — 7/299 — 325 Macquarie St
WHEN IN LIVERPOOL, YOU MUST TRY
LAMBURGHINI BURGER
Takeaway has taken a regal turn with burgers that feature ingredients as posh as their namesake. A lamb pattie topped with their secret blue cheese, yoghurt and fig sauce is aptly named the Lamburghini. Rev it up a notch with a “pimp my side” of buttermilk-fried chicken. — Al Barakeh Charcoal Chicken, 77 Scott St
BAHN MI
The trick to a good Vietnamese roll has everything to do with freshness — the soft baguette filled with pork or chicken then topped with brightly coloured crisp carrots and coriander. They taste as good as they look. — Bun Me Baguette, 142 Macquarie St
SMOOTHIES
You can try a standard blend of basic fruits for this ice-cold summer favourite, or you can be a bit adventurous and order a super tasty concoction made with avocado, strawberries, pistachios with bits of kunafa, a sugar soaked Middle Eastern pastry. — Gelato Café, 3/381 Macquarie St
BEEF PHO
It’s so light yet so filling. The delicate broth is just slightly sweet and perfectly compliments the thin slices of beef and rice noodles. Try adding some lime and chilli sauce for a spicier variation.— VN Noodles, 42 Railway St
ALL DAY BREAKFAST
An ideal spot for those who start their day a bit later than most or just have a hankering for brekkie well past noon. There are daily specials such as the brioche French toast served with berries and vanilla mascarpone — Macchina Espresso, 264 Macquarie St
